The state Board of Parole Hearings unanimously denied release
Tuesday to former Manson follower Susan Atkins.
Officials at the California Institution for Women in Chino
requested a compassionate release for Atkins, who is dying of brain
cancer, in March.
Her husband, James Whitehouse, argued at the parole hearing that
there was no longer reason to keep her in prison, because of her
deteriorating health. Family members of Manson victims and
prosecutors told the board that Atkins should remain incarcerated.
Atkins, who was at CIW from 1971 until her recent
