Regarding the July 16 Style article "The Impassive Bystander":
I'm happy to report that in Silver Spring compassion is alive
and well. My almost-90-year-old mother-in-law, Ruth, has fallen
several times in the last couple of years.
Each time, concerned bystanders -- of all races and
ethnicities, I might add -- rushed to help her.
On a windy day, when a gust knocked Ruth to the ground, a woman
on a Metrobus persuaded the driver to stop and wait while she
hurried off the bus and helped my mother-in-law get to her feet and
made sure that she was okay.
When my mother-in-law stumbled on a curb on Colesville Road,
several people went to her assistance, including one who crossed
