Firefighters say an arsonist put the lives of 17 people in jeopardy after starting a blaze in an Exeter hotel.

Fire investigators say they are also looking into why there appeared to be no working fire alarms or smoke detectors in the three-storey St Nicholas House Hotel, in Alphington Road.

The fire was spotted by a passer-by before it took a hold on the large house just past the Alphington Road railway bridge.

A member of the public, walking home at around 10pm on Thursday, spotted smoke coming from the building and immediately called the fire service.

When they arrived, firefighters found a ground- floor room well alight.
