Army Reserve builds home in Hammond

Ellsworth will lose a piece of its character and feel a dent in its economy when the U.S. Army Reserve 652nd Engineer Company moves north to Hammond.

But change is not all bad, said Village President Gerald DeWolfe.

DeWolfe said his community fought long and hard to keep the reserve center in town by buying and offering land to the Army Corps of Engineers, but the Pentagon chose a site closer to the highway in Hammond.

"It's something that you are going to miss them, not seeing them on the street or driving by on drill weekend," said DeWolfe, who rose to the rank of sergeant first class when he served in the 652nd from 1966 to 1988.
