Article: Feast of apple pie fairs

On Saturday the people of Marldon turn out for their annual Apple Pie Fair.

It is 50 years since the fair was revived and thousands attend for an old fashioned celebration. Today we feature pictures from the 1968 event.

The Marldon apple pie was first linked with the annual fair and sports day held at Cary Park in St Marychurch. Every year George Hill of Marldon would bake a huge pie and take it to the fair in a cart drawn by two black donkeys.

From 1888 onwards Marldon had its own fair and when George died the apple pie tradition continued, but this time the pie remained firmly within Parish boundaries and eaten at the local fair.

The original Marldon fair did not survive the social trauma ...
