EU not to impose "solution" on Ireland over Lisbon Treaty: Sarkozy

LONDON, July 21 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday the Europe Union would not impose a "solution" on Ireland after its rejection on the Lisbon Treaty last month.

"I never said that Ireland had to organize a new referendum," Sarkozy said at a joint news conference after talks with Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen in Dublin.

"I understand it is the Irish who must decide," said Sarkozy, who arrived in Dublin on Monday for a visit in an attempt to save the treaty rejected by the Irish people in a referendum on June 12.
