Foam food containers banned from L.A. city buildings

LOS ANGELES, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday imposed a ban on foam food containers in city buildings, beginning July 1, 2009.

The plan requires officials to replace containers made of polystyrene -- commonly known by the brand name Styrofoam -- at city- owned buildings, Los Angeles International Airport and city- sponsored events.

City employees also will be directed to use re-usable cups and plates whenever possible.
