This column is dedicated to anyone, anywhere, who has ever been
anointed with the title "entertainment chairman." Nobody wants to be
one, but every organization has one - therefore, somebody has to be
one.
I often get calls from program chairmen to speak at various
functions, and now that I've revived my dormant singing career,
occasionally even to warble a few notes. When it's necessary, I hate
to turn them down because I know from experience what a frustrating
job it is. I'm always amazed when I see club booklets listing
purpose, membership requirements, officers and monthly programs for
the whole year. How can anyone plan that far ahead? How do you nail
somebody down for a date 11 months ...
