Article: SMILE AWHILE ; Program chairman's job is all work and no pay

This column is dedicated to anyone, anywhere, who has ever been anointed with the title "entertainment chairman." Nobody wants to be one, but every organization has one - therefore, somebody has to be one.

I often get calls from program chairmen to speak at various functions, and now that I've revived my dormant singing career, occasionally even to warble a few notes. When it's necessary, I hate to turn them down because I know from experience what a frustrating job it is. I'm always amazed when I see club booklets listing purpose, membership requirements, officers and monthly programs for the whole year. How can anyone plan that far ahead? How do you nail somebody down for a date 11 months ...
