The flare at the Blackfoot Landfill in Pike County, Ind., burns
off 400 cubic feet of methane gas per minute - enough to generate
power for more than 1,500 average Tri-State homes.
On Thursday, Energy Systems Group (ESG), a company owned by
Vectren, and Veolia Environmental Services, which owns the landfill,
announced a plan to use the gas to do exactly that.
A plant to burn the gas to generate power will be built next to
the 164-acre landfill. ESG will design, build, own and operate the
power plant.
Officials of both companies said the power from the project - a
$3 million to $4 million investment - will be sold to Vectren.
