The commander of a West-based company of Royal Marines was
yesterday made an MBE for beating the Taliban in battle while
working to improve living conditions for the people of Afghanistan.
Major Daniel Cheesman, 34, from Salisbury, was honoured for
excelling both on and off the battlefield after 10 months in war-
ravaged Helmand Province.
His MBE marked a second major achievement in just two days for 40
Commando, based at Norton Manor Camp in Taunton, whose current tour
began last September.
On Wednesday 40 Commando reservist Matt Croucher received the
George Cross, the nation's highest gallantry award, after diving on
