Residents near Barmston Drain are urging the Environment Agency
to routinely dredge it to prevent flooding.
It comes after the Mail revealed the agency had launched an
investigation after hundreds of dead fish were found in the drain.
The agency claimed the fish died due to a lack of oxygen because
of soaring summer temperatures and low water flow, exacerbated by
large amounts of duckweed.
However, residents believe the problems are simply due to poor
maintenance.
Malcolm Whittaker, 72, of Orchard Park, is also angry at people
who use the drain as a place to dump unwanted items.
He has questioned the Environment Agency over why it does not
clean out the drain more often, only to be "fobbed ...
