A city medic has repeated his belief that homeopathic medicines are placebos following the publication of new figures about their use.

The number of prescriptions issued for homeopathic remedies has almost halved in two years to 49,300 in 2007 from 83,000 in 2005, statistics from the Prescription Pricing Authority show.

That is despite an overall increase in the number of prescriptions written in primary care from 720 million in 2005 to 796.3 million in 2007.
