Police Detective Paul Bentley, who has died aged 87, made history
when he handcuffed Lee Harvey Oswald just over an hour after the
assassination of American President John F Kennedy.
The detective, who died at his home in Dallas on Monday, could
not have known the significance of his actions that day.
He did not know that the man he arrested was the suspect wanted
for gunning down the president of the US. But his bravery and
experience as an officer ensured that he put himself in the firing
line when, less than 80 minutes after the gunshot that changed
history, he was called to assist in the arrest of a suspect wanted
in connection with the shooting of a fellow officer.
