The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced that it will back a bid to the European Commission to grant the humble pasty Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.

This would allow only those making Cornish pasties in Cornwall in a traditional manner and to a traditional recipe, to use the term "Cornish pasty" in the branding and marketing of their products.
