The campaign to give the Cornish pasty the same specialist rights
and status as the pork pie and Stilton cheese moved a step closer
after it won Government backing yesterday.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
has announced that it will back a bid to the European Commission to
grant the humble pasty Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)
status.
This would allow only those making Cornish pasties in Cornwall in
a traditional manner and to a traditional recipe, to use the term
"Cornish pasty" in the branding and marketing of their products.
The significant move by the Government follows similar backing in
2005 for pork pies made in the Melton Mowbray area of ...
