Ashley Jackson was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1940. His
paintings of brooding moorlands have been exhibited worldwide and
have been described as being synonymous with Yorkshire. Since
opening his first gallery back in 1963, he has become one of the
country's most successful landscape watercolourists and in 1967 he
was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
What's your first memory of being outdoors?
For my first birthday, in Bangalore, India, my mother hired a
bear charmer with
his dancing bear to entertain me
and my cousins.
What's your favourite part of the county and why?
Swaledale is one of my favourite parts of the county, because it
