Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (12A), his sequel to Batman
Begins, appears before British audiences heavily freighted with
rumour and expectation. It has already broken box-office records in
the US, bolstered by the weight of myth rapidly accruing to Heath
Ledger, the late actor whose last completed screen role was that of
the Joker, the most flamboyantly fractured soul in the film.
For a short while - especially when seen, as I saw it, on an
enormous IMAX screen - it appears to merit the hype. To share
Batman's eye-view as he dips from the dizzying heights of a Gotham
City skyscraper to the pavements below is to be briefly thrilled by
the brute power of cinema. Then the flaws creep ...
