A TRIP to a Glasgow East tenement summed up the futility of Labour's by-election campaign.

A group of activists, hoping the block of fl ats would be full of potential supporters, instead found a lone resident at the top of the stairs, refusing to open the door.

When the shy man eventually emerged, after being assured the canvassers were not police, Labour found the individual was smeared in his own excrement.

A well-run campaign, Labour figures believe, would not have wasted time and effort on such pointless adventures.

"We were out-organised by the Nationalists, that is the bottom line, " said party MP Jim Devine.
