Walks can be useful -- deadly, even -- if you empower them with a few well-timed hits.

After a slow start, the Pirates banged out 10 hits Monday against the Colorado Rockies. The Pirates also drew nine walks, including four in a four-run fifth inning, and strolled to an 8-4 victory.

The Pirates did not play station-to-station all night. Nate McLouth led off the sixth inning with a majestic, solo homer to right field. The ball traveled 448 feet, bouncing off the grassy slope outside the ballpark and plopping into the Allegheny River.

It was McLouth's second career splashdown shot, the 10th by a Pirate, and the 23rd overall since PNC Park opened in 2001.
