The Catholic Church has gone through a rough patch because of the clerical sex abuse scandal. National coverage by both the electronic and print media was extensive and rightly so. Guest columns and editorials in the print media in particular have been critical. As this became less newsworthy, the media moved on to other topics.

Locally, the Tribune in editorials and political cartoons has spoken out vigorously against the church because of its positions on abortion, embryonic stem cell research and same-sex marriage.
