Bid to cut supermarket's use of plastic bags welcomed

Environmental campaigners have welcomed a decision by the
Government to encourage supermarkets to cut the number of plastic
bags they give to customers by 70 per cent before next spring.
Stores could be forced by legislation to reduce the number of
plastic bags they hand out to customers, and plastic bags could cost
10p each as part of the move with the money going to
environmentally-friendly charities.
Wildlife cameraman Rebecca Hosking, whose documentary about
marine animals dying after mistaking plastic bags for food off the
coasts of Hawaii triggered a global movement to ban plastic bags,
welcomed the move.
