A two-alarm fire at a Prince George's County power plant, one of
Maryland's largest, injured one worker yesterday morning but did not
disrupt the plant's production of electricity, authorities said.
The blaze at the Chalk Point Generating Plant started about 9:45
a.m., as crews for a demolition company were removing a large piece
of equipment known as a scrubber, said Richard Fawal, a spokesperson
for Mirant Corp., which owns the plant.
Firefighters had almost completely extinguished the blaze by
about 1 p.m., Fawal said.
The scrubber, used to clean emissions from the plant, had not
been functional for several years, Fawal said. He declined to
