AS SYMBOLISM goes, nothing could have been more revealing of a new pecking order in the glory game of football than two dramatic images of the world's greatest player, Zinedine Zidane.

In one he is scoring the tumultuous, mesmerising goal which delivered a ninth European Cup for his club Real Madrid at Hampden Park last May. In the other, a few weeks later, he is standing bewildered and covered in sweat on a World Cup field as Denmark over- ran his belief that he could score one of the most stunning doubles in the history of the game.
