Caritas Christi Health Care System, New England's second-largest
hospital chain, yesterday resigned its membership in the
Massachusetts Hospital Association, the state's powerful lobby for
acute-care hospitals.
The resignation was made in a short letter from Dr. Ralph de la
Torre, Caritas Christi's chief executive.
Brian Carty, chief marketing officer for Caritas Christi, said
the chain could not justify the expense of belonging to the
association, which he said was about $700,000 a year.
"It's a lot of money, and we want to make sure we use that money
in the most effective way to advance public policy," said Carty. "We
think there are other ways we can influence the public policy
debate."
