When it comes to court fees, board guilty of piling on

The McLean County Board is right to review imposing a filing fee on all civil legal cases to support a Family Visitation Center.

The $8 fee might not seem like much on its own, but the problem is all the other fees that are tacked on to cases - criminal as well as civil - and how they add up.

It is particularly burdensome when the person paying the fee derives little or no benefit from the function to which they are contributing.

For example, the Family Visitation Center is a neutral ground for dropping off or picking up children in custody cases in which a court order prohibits the parents from having contact with each other. Yet, the $8 fee would be added to all civil cases, regardless ...
