Article: Port of New Orleans, maritime interests consider lawsuit options

Maritime businesses have lost time and money since the July 23 barge and tanker collision, fuel oil spill and subsequent Mississippi River closure, and recouping those losses could take years, if it is possible at all.

New Orleans maritime attorney George Fowler said lawsuits will abound because of the accident. The economic impact to government agencies, including the Port of New Orleans and the U.S. Coast Guard, will be steep, he said.

Pair those costs with Coast Guard reports that the tugboat crew, supplied by DRD Towing Co. of Harvey, was improperly licensed and affected entities are "going to be looking for a deep pocket everywhere," Fowler said.
