Article: Just 44% of women have `normal' births

FEWER WOMEN in England are having "normal" births, a report revealed yesterday.

Figures presented to MPs showed the proportion of normal births had dropped by almost 15 per cent over the past decade to a record low of 44 per cent. A normal birth is defined as one which does not involve induction, Caesarean section, assisted delivery, or regional anaesthesia.

The statistics were compiled by the information website BirthChoice UK from Department of Health data. They include figures of normal birth rates for individual maternity units which reveal huge variation across the country. Rates ranged between 27 per cent and 68 per cent.
