King Lear's not the most obvious candidate for panto treatment,
is it?
No it's not, but why can't tragedy be a laugh? It was born out of
doing Hamlet as a pantomime five years ago. We thought, what can we
do next? And King Lear has got ugly sisters [Goneril and Regan
] so
we just took it from there. We've got a panto villain, Edmund, crazy
ridiculous costumes, lots and lots of hideous jokes, and lots of
asides to the audience, and "look behind you"s. We even put in a
Queen Lear for a laugh. We just thought King Lear had to be a hen-
pecked hubby. And we've got two mad doctors, and a bear, who just
