Bucs' newbies taking advantage of shots

PHOENIX -- Andy LaRoche was getting nowhere fast with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brandon Moss was doing the same with the Boston Red Sox.

Now that they are with the Pirates, arriving in a deadline-day trade for Jason Bay, the two former bench players have moved into full-time roles, making immediate contributions.

On Sunday, both newcomers homered in the Pirates' 8-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Moss hit a long, solo shot to center field off Carlos Zambrano. LaRoche whacked a game-tying, two-run homer in the eighth.

"They're coming around," said Pirates manager John Russell. "You can see the kind of power they showed. They're doing a good job for us, and it's fun to watch."
