PHOENIX -- Andy LaRoche will be out of the Pirates' lineup until
at least Friday after injuring his right thumb.
"It's just a little setback, a mild sprain," LaRoche said Tuesday
afternoon.
LaRoche sustained the injury Monday while batting in the ninth
inning of a 13-7 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. As he hit a game-
inning grounder, the bat was jammed back into the webbing between
his thumb and finger.
X-rays taken immediately after the game were negative. LaRoche
was examined yesterday by a hand specialist, who found no
significant damage.
LaRoche will not swing or throw again until Friday, when the
Pirates begin a three-game series in Philadelphia.
