A Post office handed a temporary reprieve was forced to close on Monday night but talks on its future continue.

Negotiations between Stroud Town Council and Post Office Ltd appear to have faltered.

Council leaders are ready to plough in pounds75,000 over three years to keep Uplands Post Office open.

But they have been frustrated by Post Office Ltd's apparent reluctance to reopen it straight away with council involvement.

"We had hoped the negotiations would have been tied up before today," said Stroud mayor John Marjoram. "They have not been so we are still negotiating and hopeful of a positive outcome.
