Apparently poppies are about to disappear from our fields because of the decision to scrap set-aside. Several newspapers have run with this story, and I must admit that I have struggled to understand what all the fuss is about.

Surely, in a time of global food shortages, if poppies disappeared and crops were grown on the land instead, this would be a good thing? The story is also slightly misleading. Set-aside was scrapped several months ago, therefore if poppies are still in our fields today, set-aside is not the reason for it.
