Homebuyers are in line for a multi-million-pound coup under
Government plans to scrap stamp duty.
The temporary measure, said to be a key plank of Gordon Brown's
autumn fightback, is aimed at kickstarting the faltering housing
market.
Westcountry estate agents have been calling for the move for
several months amid fears the extra costs of buying a home were
proving too great an obstacle for those struggling to raise the
money for a home. But critics warned the measure would worsen levels
of national debt.
In Devon and Cornwall in 2006-07, stamp duty on homes raised
pounds185 million for Treasury coffers, up by pounds30 million on
the previous year.
