As Americans look for ways to reduce their spend- ing on gasoline while being environmentally minded, SUVs aren't the only garage occupants getting a hard look.

People are also thinking about their gas-powered lawn mowers.

The mowers dirty the air and take fuel that costs nearly $4 a gallon, so when it comes to cutting the grass, many South Shore residents are cutting the gas.

"People are definitely in the market for alternatives to gas- powered mowers," said Mark Vassali of Curry Hardware in Quincy.

Sales of manual - or push reel - mowers at Curry are double what they were last summer.

"It's to the point where we can't keep them in stock," Vassali said.
