Article: AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL <> De Pere advances to regional tournament

The De Pere American Legion baseball team won the double- elimination Class AAA state tournament Wednesday in La Crosse, beating Eau Claire, 4-3 and 6-3. The victory earned De Pere a berth in the seven-state Midwest Regional next week.

De Pere (39-13) will take on the Illinois state champion at 9 a.m. Thursday in the first game of the five-day, double-elimination tournament.

The regional champion will play for the national title starting Aug. 22 in Shelby, N.C.

De Pere's Tony Cantalupo, the winning pitcher in the final, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Class AA: Onalaska (30-6) won the tournament in Merrill with an 11-1 victory over Kaukauna.
