PHILADELPHIA -- Pirates left-hander Phil Dumatrait had
arthroscopic shoulder surgery Friday morning and will miss the rest
of the season.
Dumatrait has been on the disabled list since July 11 with
bursitis in his throwing shoulder. The condition didn't make
significant improvement during a rehab assignment in Bradenton,
Fla., so the Pirates opted for minor surgery.
Dr. Patrick DeMeo operated on Dumatrait at Allegheny General
Hospital in Pittsburgh. DeMeo created space to relieve a pinch on
the rotator cuff tendon and alleviate future irritation.
"(Dumatrait's) shoulder -- rotator cuff, labrum, etc. -- was
found to be in very good shape overall," general manager Neal
