Kara Lawson started with the right dream but the wrong sport. She
was only 3 when her parents, Bill and Kathleen, sat in front of the
television to watch the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Lawson was
immediately enthralled when she saw Evelyn Ashford win the gold
medal in the 100 meters at the Coliseum.
"At that point, I decided, I want to be an Olympian," Lawson
recalled recently. "I wanted to run the 100-meter dash, which is
probably the premier event in the Olympics. And I wanted to win a
gold medal."
It didn't take long before Lawson devised her own training
program. Her home in Alexandria was located on a corner, with a stop
