Chuck Tanner can barely tell the story about the time he had a
young Rich "Goose" Gossage pinned against a wall, screaming at him.
He's laughing too hard.
Tanner, Gossage'sfirst major-league manager with the White
Sox, finally pulls it together to tell the tale, which happened
before one of Gossage's first few seasons.
In Tanner's office before a spring training game, Tanner handed
Gossage a roster with the pitcher's name crossed out. Tanner told
Gossage he hadn't improved and he had no reason to bring him north
to start of the season. Before long, they were nose to nose.
"Every vein in his head is popping out," Gossage said. "I just
lost it too."
