Article: Tyson Foods Reinstates Labor Day As Holiday At Tennessee Plant ; Workers Can Still Choose Muslim Holiday

Labor Day is still a holiday at Tyson Foods, according to a company press release sent out this week.

Christian groups accused the company of replacing Labor Day with a celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

But Gary Mickelson, director of media relations at Tyson, said in a phone interview this week the charges were false.

Employees at a Tyson plant in Shelbyville, Tenn., asked for Eid al-Fitr to be one of their eight paid holidays in place of Labor Day, but quickly reneged on the deal last week.

The initial change came about as a result of union demands. Eighty-percent of the union workers at the plant approved of the measure.
