CLAREMONT - Phil Elderkin has been a master wordsmith for more
than 65 years.
Claremont's Elderkin, for years a leading writer for the
Christian Science Monitor, believes Groucho Marx, with whom he spoke
in 1977, was his favorite interview, even topping Joe DiMaggio's
tales of his 56-game hitting streak.
"One of Groucho's best yarns, which he claimed he never told
anybody before, occurred during an early Broadway musical in which
he played the lead, although he couldn't remember the name of the
show," Elderkin, 83, wrote in an e-mail.
"'For the first time in my life, I had begun to make some real
money,' Groucho told me. 'So I rewarded myself with my first new
