Mounts Bay began their preparations in earnest for life in
National Division Two with a gritty and hard-fought 9-8 victory
against an abrasive and pugnacious Pontypridd outfit.
It was a stern test for the new-look Bay team and on a day when
foul weather conditions made running rugby a real lottery, the boot
of fly-half Dan Hawkes proved decisive.
There was little indication that this was a friendly, with the
first flare up coming after two minutes as Bay's former Plymouth
Albion flanker Brett Stroud squared up to the Welsh front row.
Minutes later he was guilty of a late tackle on Pontypridd full-
back Kristian Baller, quickly followed by a mass brawl on the
