Maldivian president ratifies new constitution

COLOMBO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom ratified the new constitution on Thursday to continue the island country's political reform, the Maldivian Presidential Office said on its official website.

Gayoom also dissolved the People's Special Majlis (the Constitutional Assembly) established on July 19, 2004 to revise the current constitution which came into force on January 1, 1998.

In his speech before the ratification, Gayoom said the new constitution would usher in a new era of governance that was based on the principles of modern liberal democracy and the principles of Islam.
