Article: State bond allots $12 million for Neponset River cleanup

The health of the Neponset River is in line to receive a big boost with the passage of a $1.7 billion environmental bond bill that includes $12 million to clean up and restore the Lower Neponset River Watershed. .

The measure passed the state Senate and House on July 31, and last week was awaiting the signature of Governor Deval Patrick. If the Neponset money survives the governor's line-item veto process, it is expected to allow the state to remove polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, from the waterway and the riverbed. PCBs are industrial toxins known to cause cancer.
