Dog Rescue of Maryland will benefit from the Victory Lounge's annual Hawaiian luau from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Aug. 23 at 4584 Mountain Road.

The new local nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the lives of local canine friends is run by Michael and Leanna Lennox, who volunteered for a "breed specific" rescue for many years. They decided to open their own when they had to turn away different breeds in need.

"It was heartbreaking when we couldn't help these animals because they were not specific to the breed we were working with," Mr. Lennox said. "More than one breed needs help."

The rescue shelter has approximately 19 volunteers who work diligently in finding good homes for all their dogs. ...
