RITTMAN -- There are many choices when it comes to vitamins -- once-a-day multivitamins, vitamins for seniors, vitamins for women and men -- choosing can be confusing and requires proper knowledge. Or, is the taking of them an unnecessary practice all together?

First and foremost, people need to eat a balanced diet, which includes five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, said Tom Gaborick, director of pharmacy at WRH Summa Health System.

Vitamins are meant to be an enhancement to one's diet, not a meal replacement, he said.

Each vitamin has a specific job. If one has low levels of certain vitamins, a deficiency disease can develop such as rickets or scurvy.
