Former boilermaker John MacDougall rose from a working class
background to take his seat at Westminster.
The MP for Glenrothes, who died yesterday aged 60, followed a
well-trodden Old Labour path, through unions and the local political
scene of the 60s and 70s.
Born on December 8, 1947, in Dunfermline, Fife, Mr MacDougall
started work at the RGC oil rig construction yard at Methil, Fife,
on the east coast of Scotland in 1964.
It was here he got his first taste of politics, becoming a shop
steward of the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trade
Union (GMBATU) in 1978.
He rose to became shop steward convener of the union and in this
