A POPULAR triathlon on the region?s sporting calendar has been
cancelled due to the rising cost of closing roads.
The 17th Teesdale Triathlon was due to take place in Barnard
Castle, County Durham, on Sunday, August 31.
More than 200 athletes were expected to compete in the event,
which involved a 500m swim in the pool at Teesdale Leisure Centre,
followed by a 28km cycle ride and a 7.2km crosscountry run.
A statement from Teesdale District Council, which runs the event,
said: ?The safety of the competitors, spectators, volunteers and
leisure centre staff has always been of paramount concern.
