When shopping for wine, I have often noticed shelf tags noting
that a wine received a high rating from Wine Spectator magazine or a
gold medal from a wine competition. And I wondered what the
difference was between an 88 and a 90 rating, or what separates a
gold medal from a silver medal wine.
So, when I was invited to be judge-in-training at this year's
Indy International Wine Competition, held June 26-28, my response
was an immediate, enthusiastic "yes." I wanted to sniff, swirl and
sip with the experts.
The competition is the third largest in the United States. This
year's event included about 3,200 wines from 29 states, including an
entry from Alaska's only winery, and 12 countries.
