Skilled craftsman in print, husband and father, choral singer,
honorary 'pastor' of his church, war veteran - those were the
highlights of the life of Exeter's George Morrell who has died, aged
94.
George was born in Leeds in 1914. His first job aged 14 as a lab
assistant in the botany department of Leeds University earned him 10
shillings (50p) a week.
He took up a seven-year apprenticeship as a printer with the
Leeds Daily Chronicle and later moved to printers Petty and Sons.
Romance blossomed during the company's annual outing between George
and his fellow worker Marjorie. They were both 17.
