Veal is a by-product of milk production. Each year cows calve in
order to produce milk; female calves have a future as replacement
dairy cows, but unless we are prepared to give up drinking milk and
eating cheese, the fate of the male dairy calf is a fact of life
that cannot be ignored.
Banishing British veal from our diets condemns the calf to facing
the bullet or being exported, often hundreds of miles, for veal
production in intensive systems in Belgium or Holland.
In a time when the Government is encouraging us not to waste
food, culling thousands of potentially productive dairy calves has
become morally indefensible.
