It is the size of a golf ball, but one of the most toxic
creatures in the sea. The blue ringed octopus looks as fearsome as
it is with venom so powerful it can kill a human with a single bite.
And, the lurid looking cephalopod is on its way to Plymouth where
it will be safely under lock and key at the National Marine
Aquarium.
The larger of these striking creatures, Hapalochlaena lunulata,
grows to no more than 20 cm across while the smaller, more common
Hapalochlaena maculosa, weighs a mere 28 grams and carries enough
poison to kill 26 adults in minutes.
There is no known antidote to its venom and once bitten, the only
chance of survival is 24-hour heart massage while the toxin ...
